1. What will I eat?
Meals are served buffet style three times a day in the dining room located on the ground floor of the Foreign Teacher's building. Meal times are 7:00 am - 8:00 am, 12:00pm - 1:00pm, and 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. The schedule may vary slightly on weekend and holidays. The food includes Western and Chinese dishes. Many teachers eat a few meals a week off campus at the many Chinese and Western restaurants. Eating out is extremely cheap, and provides a nice change of pace from the dining hall meals. During the winter holiday food is provided at no additional cost, but during the month of July food needs to be paid for out of one's own pocket. If you were helping with summer camp or working over the summer in some other way, then food would be covered by the university.
2. Can you buy American food?
There are more and more western products appearing on the shelves of the major supermarkets including popcorn, Dove chocolate, Nabisco cookies, and muffins. There is also a western-style "super store" store about a 45 minute drive from campus where you can buy many western products.
3. Can I drink the water?
You cannot drink the tap water, but there is bottled water provided for free in every hallway in the Foreign teacher's flat. Bottled water is sold throughout China. Many teachers buy a hot/cold water dispenser for 50-100 RMB and free bottled water is delivered to your front door. This is a nice option so you don’t have to go outside your apartment, but stay inside the comfort of your home.
